Big Bird Classic Regatta

2008 Notice of Race:

  1. Venue
    The Big Bird Classic Regatta is organized by the Pelican Yacht Club (PYC) in affiliation with the Manitoba Sailing Association (MSA) and the Canadian Yachting Association (CYA). The regatta will be held at Pelican Lake, Ninette, Manitoba.
  2. Rules
    The races will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing 2005 – 2008, the prescriptions of the CYA, and the rules of each class concerned (except as any of these are altered by this notice of race), and the Sailing Instructions.
  3. Eligibility and Entry
    Each competitor in the Optimist Class must be 15 and under as of December 31st 2008. (Born in 1993 or later). Competitors in other classes must be 16 & over as of December 31st 2008 (Born in 1992 or later). Each competitor shall be required to show proof of age and membership in a club, which is currently in good standing with the CYA. (A membership card is the normal method of proof). Competitors from outside the country are required to show proof of membership in their own national authority.
  4. Classes
       This event is open to all of the following classes of sailing vessel:
    • Optimist - 15 & under
    • Mono Hulls
    • Catamaran’s
    • Martin 16
    • Keelboats
    • Sail board
  5. Scoring
    The Low Point Scoring System, as described in Appendix A of the Racing Rules of Sailing, will apply. 6 races are scheduled of which one race must be completed to constitute a series.
    Mono Hulls, Catamaran’s, Martin 16 Keel boats, 16 & under will be scored separately.
  6. Sailing Instructions (SI)
    SI’s will be included in the Registration Package, which will be available at registration. They will also be posted on the PYC web site (see below) and the club bulletin board prior to the event.
  7. Awards
      Awards will be awarded to the lowest score overall in the Optimist, Mono Hulls, Catamaran’s, Martin 16 and Keel boats.
  8. Schedule
      The following schedule is planned. PYC race committee reserves the right to make changes to the schedule. Observe web site or club bulletin boards for changes.

  9. Safety
    All non-keel boat competitors are required to wear a DOT approved PFD at all times while afloat. Keel boat competitors shall have PFD on board for each crew. This amends rule 40.
    All dingy boats shall have a minimum 5-meter x 7mm diameter painter line that must be attached to their mast when on the water, except for the sailboard class, which must have a legal up-haul.
    Inspections will be conducted to ensure that all boats comply with the class rules and the sailing instructions.
    Note: At CYA events, all sailors are responsible to ensure they are covered adequate for liability insurance. CYA members receive this as part of their membership at sanctioned events.
  10. CYA Discipline Code
    It is expected that all athletes and coaches attending this event will sign, respect, and adhere to the CYA Code of Conduct. Violations will be taken very serious and penalties may be imposed.
  11. Entry Fees
    Race registration includes both racing and social events are listed in the schedule above. Race only fees includes racing and awards participation only.
    Fees are charged depending upon participation interests.

    Note: Early registration will help plan the event logistics.
  12. Accommodations
    Camping is not available at the yacht club. Boat trailers may be parked at the club in designated locations on a first-come-first-serve-basis. Space is limited.
