Welcome to Learn to Sail at Pelican Yacht Club!

We have had a wonderful sailing season, and even as we are beginning to wrap up for the year, we are still stubbornly holding out for a few more sunny sailing days.

Our first week of August was devoted to private lessons, and a special group event run in conjunction with the Elspeth Reid Family Resource Centre from Brandon. Families were divided into 3 groups, each taking turns having rides on a keel boat, lasers and laser 2s. Many thanks to Brian and Kevin for offering keel boat rides.

From August 9 to 16, six sailors participated in our 5th week of regular session lessons. Two students completed White Sail 1, two in Optimist 1, one in Optimist 2, and one in Wet Feet.

From August 16 to 20, we ran a half-day introductory sailing course in Killarney. The winds were great for the four first-time sailors. It was set up through the Killarney Recreation Centre and the sailing took part on the main beach. This hopefully sparked some more interest to the local Killarney people and we look forward to going back next summer.

The 5th Annual Little Bird Regatta was held on Saturday, August 21. Twenty-two sailors came out for an awesome day of sailing, music and good times with friends. Congrats to Navan, our 2010 Little Bird recipient – well done! Thanks to everyone who helped make this event such a success.

Our last week of regular session lessons was August 23 to 27. Three students participated in White Sail 1, 2 and 3 courses, braving the chilly end-of-August weather. Congrats to Rowan who graduated from the White Sail program!

This week we are wrapping up the program for the season. Commodore’s Cup will be our final sail of the season, on Saturday September 4. All learn to sail students are welcome to come and sail – two races will be run beginning at 10:30am. Dinner and music with The Beetles will follow the racing at the yacht club. Tickets for the dinner must be purchased in advance by contacting Mike or Moya Taylor - taylorm@westman.wave.ca or 204-728-8239.
